This is a presentation given at Drupal Con about the WordPress conflict. There are a lot of comparisons between the projects that people might find interesting.

WordPress had a “win” with Create Content Model, but instead of embracing it they labeled it an “oops”. I guess despite what some might want to think, WordPress is not acting like a startup. When an entrepreneur sees something stick they jump on it like a $20 bill being blown down the sidewalk. I like how Matt Medeiros subtly suggest that this kind of functionality in core is not really that outrageous or abnormal.

Dries Buytaert, the founder of Drupal, announced at DrupalCon Portland a new initiative called Starshot. It appears to be their response to WordPress and their plan to regain leadership.

Drupal is planning their site builder solution and this discussion talks about their considerations for using Gutenberg. It is interesting to see how they evaluate the user experiences, goals, and where Gutenberg doesn’t fit into that vision … kind of along the lines of critiques of our Site Builder.

Just as Matt gives a keynote at WordCamp US, so too Drupal founder Dries Buytaert presented the State of the Drupal Project at DrupalCon North America 2023. Drupal was focusing on the importance of innovation and had a contest where project proposals were shared and voted. One of the top projects involves working on Gutenberg for Drupal. In a surprise move, Matt Mullenweg donated funds and personal to help.
